Take on wild beasts, ruthless soldiers, and ancient gods in this 2D Action-Platformer inspired by Tower-Defense combat.
When designing for Aegis Defenders, the title's genre-mashup premise proposed an immediate challenge: how do you marry the expressive fluid movement of a Platformer with the tight, controlled nature of a strategic Tower-Defense? After testing and iteration, I ultimately struck upon a delicate balance of:
1) Player weapon tuning that can handle itself against small groups of enemies, but requires backup from player traps and fortifications against larger enemy waves.
2) A resource economy that gives the player just enough to create the bare minimum fortifications necessary to survive a given wave.
3) Tight level design and resource placement that rewards solid platforming skills while clearly communicating strategic opportunities for fortifications.
While striking this balance, I blocked-out, iterated, and polished 21 levels in Unity editor. I also designed, documented, implemented, and balanced player abilities, 24 player weapons, 24 craftable pieces of equipment, over 70 enemies, and over 90 unique Tower Defense waves.
Aegis Defenders released on Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC/Mac in February 2018 and received critical praise, including a Gold Award from Famitsu.
